About the Church of the Great Unknown Thing

The Church of the Great Unknown Thing was founded in the fall of 1990 by Lawrence D. Weinberg after several conversations during which he realized that nearly all religions required one to actually believe in something.

There is a need for a church for people who do not know what they believe in, and yet want to be joiners.

About the Founder

Reverend Lawrence D. Weinberg, Esq. is an agnostic. The Reverend does not pretend to know the truth like the leaders of other religions. He isn't going to tell you what happens when you die. How the hell would he know? He has several qualifications to start a religion.

First, he is an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church (ULC). He became ordained online at the ULC monestary during the spring of 2004 after attending a wedding solemnized by a reverend of the church. A few days later he recalled having founded the Church of the Great Unknown Thing in 1990 and decided to do something with it.

Second, he has a master's degree in education and that's not too shabby.

Third, he has a law degree, and what's better than a religious leader with a legal background.

Fourth, in September 2004 he will have a doctorate in education also, and that's even better than a master's. These are all real degrees from real universities.

Our Beliefs

Although the Church of the Great Unknown Thing is not affiliated with the ULC as a reverend with the Universal Life Church, Reverend Weinberg has incorporated those tenets into the Church of the Great Unknown Thing.

  • the absolute right of freedom of religion
  • to do that, which is right

The beliefs specific to the Church of the Great Unknown Thing are:

  • it is impossible to know whether there is or is not a god
  • it is impossible to know whether our planet and/or universe was created by any type of being
  • if there is a god it is impossible to know what it wants from us
  • it is impossible to know what happens to us after we die, but it's probably nothing
  • it is impossible to know what sin is, but is possible to know what is right and we should, therefore, do what is right
  • everyone of voting age and a citizen of the United States of America must vote against George W. Bush in the 2004 election
